Written by my guest columnist, my husband Al

Hi, I’ll bet that many of you had the same experiences with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and may even have carried on the tradition with your own kids, as did Sandy and I.

Day after day, I walked to school, carrying my sandwich in my lunch bag.   It always tasted good, and I still enjoy this delicacy (though not every day for lunch.)  Being interested in the healthfulness of what I eat, I recently Googled for a listing of FDA recalls.  If you haven’t visited the FDA Recall site, you might find that this search provides a real education.   Just Google for the FDA Recall site and then type in the title of the article listed here.  (I’d put in the URL, but it is so long that it took up 25 lines when I pasted it in here!)  When I reached the site, one title popped out in full splendor. “Peanut Butter and other Peanut Containing Products Recall List.”   RECALL LIST???    A list of peanut butter and peanut containing food that were contaminated.   How can this be?  How can any self respecting American peanut butter producer contaminate this long revered food?   Here is what I found. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT, FOR THE MOST PART, YOU GET TO CHOOSE!

Women typically from 45 to 55 or so experience it, most women under 45 dread it, and most women over 60 are glad its over. What is it? If you are a woman you know the answer, and there is hope.

If you are a man, you probably have no idea, but please read on and learn.

Did you answer Menopause?

There are three basic stages of menopause. (more…)

This is Sandy speaking. Our guest columnist will be on in a second. If you have nursed your baby, you know the warmth, the love, the beauty of creation, and the pride as you hold and nurse your soft, delicate bundle. You have looked into the innocent and infinitely wise eyes studying your face. Our guest has asked me to pass on this communication, once again, to let you know just what a baby needs from a loving and caring Mommy!

Now for our guest blogger, your new baby.

Hi again, Mom. First, I want to thank you so much for nursing me. I’ve psychically tuned in to GOOGLE and other really great sites for information and gee, I’ve learned a lot. aFirst,I’m not a cow, and your milk is much healthier for me.   I’m so blessed that you have healthy nutrition, because, for example, that makes your milk rich in ascorbate, and somebody named Dr. Klenner did some research that showed that ascorbate reduced the risk of Sudden Infant Death. Your milk protects me against viruses, diseases and allergies. It also may increase my IQ, as well as (more…)

Today, I have a guest who dictated my blog for me.
Please welcome this not yet born baby!

Hi Mom,

I asked Sandy to write this because I can’t write yet but I really want to let you know what I need so I can come into this world as healthy as possible! Please listen to her and follow her advice because that is what I’m telling her to write. I chose her because she didn’t have all this information when she had her five babies and she knows that she would love to have known it so she could have been better prepared. Fortunately, all of her babies turned out fine. Her youngest is almost 49 years old and some of these needs were not even known back then, in the dark ages.

So, now for my message to you! (more…)

WOMEN’S HEALTH SOLUTIONS

As a mom of five who has worked away from home, I have a pretty good idea of what it is like.  When I learned about how my body functioned and how badly I was treating it nutritionally, I was a bit shocked and that is when I began what has so far turned into a 40 year quest to learn about nutrition and health.

We women do have special nutritional needs and cutting down on calories to prevent weight gain makes it very hard to meet those needs from diet alone. That’s why the WOMEN’S HEALTH SOLUTION makes good sense.

As we explore some of the challenges that women face it is easy to see why this is true.

First, lets look at some general patterns. First for the single working woman without children.
1. Get up and grab a cup of coffee, maybe orange juice, and a muffin or donut. Maybe
a granola bar and its off to work. If you are dieting, you may be choosing sugar free.

To learn the perils of going sugar free you’ll want to read my series
part one
, part two, and part three.

2. If you are commuting on public transportation, you may just buy another cup of coffee to drink on the ride. (more…)

Today I really want to talk to all you moms and would be moms out there. Why? Who makes most of the food purchases? Who chooses the type and brand of food supplements or vitamins? Who is Doctor Mom when child or husband has a tummy ache? Dr. Mom is a role we take seriously.

Over the last 40 years of teaching about health, non-toxic products for the home and nutrition, I have learned a lot. Over the years, as a result of my training, we have changed our diet and supplementation so I could do my best in this role.

I have been fortunate to have teachers who had impeccable credentials to teach nutrition. One is a Cornell University trained Dietician, another has, for years, taught full nutrition courses to the students at Baylor University Medical School, A world renowned PhD Cancer and nutrition researcher, and another PhD who ran the only home study school of nutrition that is accredited for a degreed program as well as for CE units for physicians and other health practitioners are just a couple more. That training on top of the extraordinarily strong science orientation of my company and the training that they provide gave me a very strong knowledge of nutrition and health.

I am frankly turned off by a lot of TV, Internet, newspaper and magazine ads hyping a “secret” plant that is rich in a “secret” nutrient. There have been “magic” juices, potions, and pills that, over the last 40 years, have come and gone because on closer true scientific investigation they just don’t live up to their promises. AND…ONCE WE FIND THEM,
WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THEM?

For about 49 years, learning about health and nutrition has absorbed me, much as I enjoy being absorbed in a good mystery. I would love to have you join me in looking at some health information from the vantage of a “nutrition detective”.

My husband, Al, recently showed me a Wellness Newsletter that his former employer sent to retirees. We read an article that is entitled, CANCER: Control Your Risk Factors, and when we finished we agreed that there was some very good information, -but some important things were missing. So let’s delve into this case try to find the missing factor(s).

I’ll start by looking at the list of eight risk factors. These included: (more…)

Whooeee!     What A Ride!

A little over 40 years ago, I had a significant awakening. I was in my 30s, mother of five and intent of caring for my family’s health. I was a firm believer in “doctor knows best.” I was also a good customer to our friendly druggist – who was a wonderful person -, and I was an “expert consumer” of antihistamines for my daily allergies. I was also prepared and competent to deal with four children, a husband, and me becoming ill whenever the fifth got a bug. One of our regular income tax deductions was “medical;” yet, none of us had a serious or significant illness. One thing I was sure about was that supplementation was a hoax, because the daily multivitamins that my doctor gave me didn’t give me more energy or make me feel better in any way.

At that time we used white bread because with our large family cost was more important than quality –  since, due to the commercials and how we grew up,  we didn’thave a clue as to the detriments of white bread and the benefits of the quality of bread that we needed.  I used diet drinks, because the label indicated that it was appropriate for dieting. I was unaware that these drinks were both counterproductive for weight management and detrimental to health. We were motivated to do the healthy things, but through ignorance, we practiced the Standard American Diet (SAD).

In 1970, I started using a brand of cleaning products that were biodegradable and nontoxic. At the time may husband, Al, and I were aware of environmental problems and we wanted to be part of the solution rather than the problem. It turned out that this company also marketed real food based food supplements – not synthetic.   I decided to try them.

ENJOYMENT & REWARD #1 – ENERGY – I had energy and once again enjoyed singing as I prepared breakfast every morning. (except Sunday which was Al’s turn)
I started on the food supplements to “prove” that they would not work – my doctor’s vitamins hadn’t helped me – why should these? (more…)

Weight Watchers has actually proclaimed that McDonalds Chicken McNuggets are a healthy food for dieting!!! What’s next?….Cokes and cigarettes??

Did you know that Weight Watchers and McDonalds have a marketing agreement? I was quite surprised to scan my e-mail this morning and see, “In a world gone mad with misinformation (and dis-information), Weight Watchers has now endorsed McDonald’s menu items as healthy food choices.” aThe author is Mike Adams, and to read the whole story,  just click on: http://www.naturalnews.com/028372_Weight_Watchers_McDonalds.html

This article gives us a good example of why we should take responsibility for our own food choices and nutritional health. The article tells about an agreement in New Zealand where Weight Watchers recommend Chicken McNuggets as a healthy choice. Being curious (my husband says nosey) I looked a bit farther. It turns out that Weight Watchers has recommended other McDonalds products in Italy – so maybe this event isn’t so isolated. (more…)

Not Mine!
What About Yours?

Well!  This information really knocked my socks off!

I received this email yesterday and was so disturbed that I felt I had to print it in my blog.  This is something that everyone who uses vitamins must be aware of.   I always try to make sure that when I post something that has negative connotations, I always include some possible alternatives and I have done so here as well.

I hope this helps us to be more diligent in our choice of food supplement manufacturers and that if you are involved with a company now, to hold them to the same standard of testing for safety as well as efficacy.

Be sure to read below the email for information about the effects of PCB’s, Polychlorinated biphenyl
