Caveat Emptor???–Buyer Beware! Part 1

18 May 2010

So, you want to be healthy?

Of course you do,  but you’re bombarded with all kinds of “information”. Now you don’t know who or what to listen to.

We have three purposes in presenting this series.

First, we want you to know that you don’t have to know all of the answers to make healthful choices.

Second,  we will provide simple guidelines that will help you make more healthful decisions.

Third, we want to encourage you to learn a few basics that go beyond just the simple guidelines.

When we were young, before many consumer protection regulations were in place, the
Latin term Caveat Emptor, meaning, “Let the buyer beware,” was a legal standard in
settling many consumer complaints. Basically, Caveat Emptor asserted that you should know what you are buying. Years ago, in a less technological society, where people were pretty much up on the technologies they used in their daily lives, Caveat Emptor appropriately placed responsibility on the individual. For example, we expected a farmer to understand the soil, farm animals, the natural feeds that they used with their animals, etc. This was before chemicalized and corporate “farming” dominated agriculture.

Today, we cannot realistically expect people to understand, or even have time to learn how to evaluate important factors about products which they consume. Those products will affect their health and the health of their families.

For example, we cannot adequately answer all of these six questions.

1. How does the body metabolize each of dozens of vitamins and minerals?

2. What are the findings of research in Europe and North America concerning the pros and cons of Genetically Modified Foods

3. What are the product benefits of chemical food additives and what do these additives
do to our body? Pop Quiz – What is the GRAS List (nothing to do with marijuana)
and how might this impact healthfulness of foods?

4. How does the FDA and the EPA determine how much of a toxic substance to allow in our food, water, and air? They estimate how many people will sicken or die based on the amount that is allowed. They trade off the health effects of a given level of toxicity against the cost, to the government in the case of cleaning the water up, and to manufacturers and other polluters, of eliminating it or at least reducing the levels. That they do this with full knowledge that they are deciding that a certain number of sick or dead people is acceptable is a given. Our biases show a bit, but we view this as a trade off of the risk that we, as consumers, bear against the cost and profitability safe, food, water and air.

5. In looking at a food supplement, do you think that having more of the mineral ingredients is
better than a smaller number? Do you know which mineral ingredients are potentially toxic?

6. What is the relationship between sugar intake, insulin production and a healthy immune
system?

You guys are AMAZING! Your level of knowledge is probably right up there with nutritional holistic guru’s like Dr. Christopher’s or my friend Dave Brackett. You guys would really like each other and have loads to talk about. I would think it would take a life time to figure out many of these concepts and clear up misconceptions alone. You’re doing a wonderful job, keep up the great work!

    Sandy,
You are always a wealth of great info! We really need to become educated and learn more about taking care of ourselves naturally. Even the FDA is getting out of hand with their push against natural supplements that are food for our bodies. Crazy, crazy world.

People can empower their life decisions by following your blog articles. Thanks so much for sharing such good information,
    Val :)

    Hi Val.
As always, you have such cogent comments. Thank you. The FDA really is doing strange things. Recently they decided that they didn’t need to set a standard for what can be called natural. Said it wasn’t high on their priority list. Amazing.

Thanks again. Your posts are always excellent. I hope people click on your link too.

Wow, incredible as usual Sandy! It does amaze me that the more I research about the food today, especially in the US, the more the buyer should beware as you say.

It has become such a complicated issue with the mass production of foods and the FDA recalls, etc.

Thank you for being so “on top” of all of this and for always sharing your knowledge with us.

    Aloha,
    Kellie :)

Hi Helen, It is amazing how things have changed. You would hope that the need for “caveat emptor” would be diminished as we have developed and matured, but unfortunately, that part hasn’t changed much. I think it is in part due to the fact that, at least, in the nutrition and environmental areas, there are very few “mom and pop” operations around where the owners were accountable to their patrons. So, we will just have to be vigilant and know that we are still in the growing and maturing mode and things will eventually be as they should.

    Thanks for your comment.
