CAVEAT EMPTOR??? – Part 2:

26 May 2010

Is it easier to pan for gold or find an honest natural food?

What a strange question! Many products that we call “foods” are far from natural- and, if we expect to have nutritional value in foods, are really far from even being food. Foods that are adulterated with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and a myriad of chemical agents for coloring, taste, preservation, texture, etc. are legally allowed to be called “natural”! Some so-called foods are virtually all chemicals, with no nutritive value.

In fact on balance, many, if not all, of these “foods” present more negative effects than positive. A little known fact is that a company that processes food can call any food product “natural”.

.

..CAVEAT EMPTOR, BUYER BEWARE! Beyond ingredient labeling requirements, our government provides little help in our search for  ..natural foods.

aa

..Think this can’t be true? The FDA posted a statement about what can be called natural on their site on the internet.

Here is the actual statement. (Really, this was the FDA and not a critic.)
‘Natural’ will remain undefined, says FDA
By Lorraine Heller, 04-Jan-2008
“The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no plans in the near future to establish a definition of the term ‘natural’, saying it has other priorities for its limited resources.”

..

As you can see, that leaves it wide open to make the claim of being natural even if all the ingredients are artificial!

Who cares about the definition? If you value your health, you care. Just one reason for caring is stated in the following quotation from research published in the prestigious British medical journal, Lancet. (considered by some to be the number one medical journal in the world):
“Artificial colours or a sodium benzoate preservative (or both) in the diet result in increased hyperactivity in 3-year-old and 8/9-year-old children in the general population.” Lancet 2007

The agribusiness companies tell you that it is necessary to use thousands of chemicals in processing foods, meat products and in growing and transporting “fresh” fruits and vegetables. Their three basic reasons are:

…………………. (1) They make growing crops more efficient,

………………….(2) They make animal production more profitable for the
………………………agribusinesses and chemical companies, (forget about
……………………..the fact that due to the inhumane methods used to grow
……………………..the animals, we end up eating meat from animals that were
……………………..often quite sick by the time they were killed), and

………………….(3) They enhance shelf life and the attractiveness of foods.

The negative effects of many of these chemicals are well documented. Periodically the FDA even bans a chemical additive after many human guinea pigs experience health problems. We should add that fish get their supply of harmful chemical from man made pollution in the waterways.

..

Our purpose however, is encourage you and to not focus on the negative. We prefer to focus on what we can do to enjoy a healthier diet.

.

Despite the fact that so many of us are eating foods that are often toxic and harmful, our bodies are so miraculously designed that for the most part we are able to continue and be relatively healthy for a long time before it catches up with us. That is why you can look around and see so many seemingly healthy people, and it is also the reason that the rate of people with degenerative diseases is almost at a full gallop with those diseases no longer being restricted to the aging.

.

The next post will follow immediately and we will provide nine general guidelines on how to optimize food choices for health.
