CONFESSIONS OF A SEMI-HEALTH NUT!

23 March 2010

Whooeee!     What A Ride!

A little over 40 years ago, I had a significant awakening. I was in my 30s, mother of five and intent of caring for my family’s health. I was a firm believer in “doctor knows best.” I was also a good customer to our friendly druggist – who was a wonderful person -, and I was an “expert consumer” of antihistamines for my daily allergies. I was also prepared and competent to deal with four children, a husband, and me becoming ill whenever the fifth got a bug. One of our regular income tax deductions was “medical;” yet, none of us had a serious or significant illness. One thing I was sure about was that supplementation was a hoax, because the daily multivitamins that my doctor gave me didn’t give me more energy or make me feel better in any way.

At that time we used white bread because with our large family cost was more important than quality –  since, due to the commercials and how we grew up,  we didn’thave a clue as to the detriments of white bread and the benefits of the quality of bread that we needed.  I used diet drinks, because the label indicated that it was appropriate for dieting. I was unaware that these drinks were both counterproductive for weight management and detrimental to health. We were motivated to do the healthy things, but through ignorance, we practiced the Standard American Diet (SAD).

In 1970, I started using a brand of cleaning products that were biodegradable and nontoxic. At the time may husband, Al, and I were aware of environmental problems and we wanted to be part of the solution rather than the problem. It turned out that this company also marketed real food based food supplements – not synthetic.   I decided to try them.

ENJOYMENT & REWARD #1 – ENERGY – I had energy and once again enjoyed singing as I prepared breakfast every morning. (except Sunday which was Al’s turn)
I started on the food supplements to “prove” that they would not work – my doctor’s vitamins hadn’t helped me – why should these? Within a week, Al and I were aware that I had more energy. Al also benefited because I was able to get up to make his breakfast.

ENJOYMENT AND REWARD #2 – KNOWLEDGE - I started reading and learning about both nutrition and how my body works – what is good for me and my family and what isn’t. My curiosity led me to read Adele Davis, and many other prominent nutritionists of that day. I’m sure that, like me, most of you enjoy learning and satisfying your curiosity. But, as Al – my favorite scientist, (his PhD is in research), would say, “show me the evidence that it works.” So we started following what I learned.

Yes, wives are the innovators, and a husband and children do not easily change habits. After “calm” persistence and insistence, changes were occurring. For example, we used only stone ground whole grain breads, and guess what – our kids really liked the breads, but ate less because the healthier bread was more nourishing and filling. We used about 50% fewer loaves, so the cost difference was reduced. We also used free range, fertile eggs, and many other things I learned about. And with considerable assertion of my rights as a loving mother and wife, the whole family used supplements regularly. One of my major pet peeves is mothers who give in to children’s junk food preferences and do not insist on healthy choices.  I believe that we must take responsibility for the health of our children and it is way too important to leave it up to a child who hasn’t the knowledge or maturity to make correct choices.

ENJOYMENT AND REWARD #3 – HEALTH
We call our business Lively Living, because at ages 75 (me) and 77 (Al), we are active in the present – and looking to the future rather than sitting in the rocking chair remembering the past.

Our first awareness of health benefits of our new life style was my enjoyment of energy for the first time after five pregnancies in 7 years. Within a year, I was using fewer antihistamines, and now I never need them. I handle any minor allergic symptoms with nutritional supplements that have only side benefits, not negative side effects. Since having surgery over 48 years ago, I’ve only been to a hospital to visit – never as a patient. I have not used a prescription drug in the last 15 to 20 years.

We also found that within a year the children were healthier. When one caught the bug at school, we would load everyone up on supplements and the bug didn’t spread. Our oldest daughter has had 5 in home deliveries with a midwife and no complications.

Al’s health results have been noteworthy. At 77, Al has never been in a hospital except as part of a physical exam. He works out at the gym 3 times a week, and comes home with a sweat. When we started our healthier life style, Al caught the “flu of the year virus,” and he used about one week of sick each year. In the past 38 or 39 years, Al has had the flu, at most ½ dozen times – and we would never consider using a flu vaccine.

ENJOYMENT AND REWARD #4 – HELPING OTHERS IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH
As you can see in my other blogs, I enjoy sharing information.  Over the years, my nourishment for the soul has known that I have helped many other people. One of my most rewarding moments was when I lost a client. When I first met her she had a variety of ailments and she was in her 70’s. I think the only things she didn’t have was Cancer and Arthritis. She was using multiple presctiptions.

After working with her on her nutrition for a couple of years, she called to place an order, but the amounts were enough for more than a year of supplementation. She then told me she would no longer be ordering from me. Over the course of the two years, he doctor kept taking her off her medication as her health improved until she was using no medication at all. Finally, her doctor completely released her from his care and told her that she was now in good enough health to live her dream and retire in Spain. This is but one of my joyous moments

My passion is healthful living, AND enjoying life.
That means that I am not a fanatic, I still enjoy the occasional hot fudge sundae or a great piece of cake, we still eat out and even (rarely) have french fries, depending on the restaurant. We only go through fast food drive throughs for iced tea though. As I continue to read and learn new things I continue to share. I am enjoying blogging, because it is another avenue for sharing.

So if you are not enjoying and reaping the rewards of healthy living, you may want to give it a try. Any time you want help in learning how to implement this lifestyle, I’ll be here for you to guide you and answer your questions. Hi Val,
It really did make such a difference. From about the third month on of all of us using the supplements, we never again had any colds or flu etc, go through the whole family. Before that, although we didn’t get a lot of “bugs” when we did, it would make the rounds, and with seven of us in the family, sometimes come back and hit us twice! And I thought there was no difference in vitamins! Hah!

Fantastic post Sandy! It is great to see the transformations that you and your family have gone through.

I completely agree with you. Getting kids started on a healthy diet as soon as possible is very important. I never understand why there aren’t any drive through restaurants that offer healthy, fresh food. It is a shame that the SAD is determined so much by cost instead of nutrition!

Hi Jodi, Yes we have! 40 years ago when I started, I thought that white bread was ok, just didn’t count it for the nutrition. I have learned so much and been privileged to share and help so many people.
    I’m very grateful for that.

    Hi Melissa,
Thanks for your great encouragement. I have always wondered about the drive through restaurants too. Seems to me that they could do well! One reason people don’t eat right is that they are in a hurry.

The other thing that is important in getting children started right is the right supplementation. Too many kids vitamins have aspartame, splenda, etc. They also have a really lacking or unbalance list on the label.

    Thanks again,
    Sandy

    Hi Sandy,

I have to LOL about the big, BiG, BIG controversy over the health care bill, when — for the most part — all we need to do (as a country), is make sure we are putting into our bodies exactly what they need.

As those of us who’ve been around nutrition for any length of time know, if it is man made, it was made to sit on the shelf. Nothing beats whole foods and whole food supplements. NOTHING!

Thanks for all you do for your readers. You are an inspiration.

    Hi Joe,

You are so right about the importance of giving our bodies what they need so that our immune systems can work as they are designed to. That means that if up to par, the immune system can ward off almost every threat that comes along.

That is really where our emphasis should be first, before ever thinking of anything in the medical system.

    Thanks for your comment,
