RESPONSIBLE FOR MY HEALTH? WHO ME?

19 February 2010

AND… most women

are responsible for

the health of their
whole family!

Years ago the author of a course in nutrition advised that if you want to find the origin of most health your health problems – go a mirror open your mouth and view the hole.  Think about what you put in to that hole, which is the entryway to feeding or poisoning your body.  Is that hard to take?  It places the responsibility for our health squarely on our own shoulders.  In the U.S. today, it is so easy to hand the responsibility to others because various groups encourage us to.

In discussing a National Health Care Plan (whichever version may finally surface) some seem to suggest that the government is responsible for our health.  Or, if not our health, (because it is actually a “sick plan, not a health plan), it is responsible for helping us get well after we suffer the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle.  As far as we can see, none of the options include true prevention… just early detection and intervention.  By then, the problem has already occurred and obviously wasn’t prevented.  That is where we come in…to help you to understand what you can do to prevent most of the challenges to your health.

Drug companies use TV commercials to introduce us to new “syndromes” and drugs, and tell us that it is the doctor’s responsibility to tell us whether we need the drugs.  Have you seen or read some of the warnings in the ads?   It is amazing that people still purchase these drugs after all of the warnings. In a few commercials, death was included among the possible side effects. Can you believe that they call death a “side effect”?

Many doctors now encourage patients to live a healthful life style, but there are still many who will tell the patient do as I say or go elsewhere.  I prefer the doctor who also understands and encourages the use of alternatives to drugs, radiation and surgery, such as diet, chiropractics, lifestyle changes, etc and places the responsibility for the decision on my shoulders.

adsfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Unfortunately, a lot of people feel that they don’t know enough to make decisions about their own health.

So here are five suggestions.  Following these suggestions may require learning and effort, but you will be well rewarded.

1.  Eat to live! Don’t live to eat! Humans have evolved eating fruits, vegetables and meats.  The introduction of non-nutrient chemical foods is new and our bodies are stressed by these non-food foods.  For example, peanut butter that lists the ingredients as Peanuts and salt is a food-food.  Peanut Butter that has other ingredients typically includes chemical non-foods, such as partially hydrogenated oil. The non-food additives are there for color, shelf life, taste, texture, etc.  They do not contribute to health and often are harmful.
Q. What can I do to learn more about how to eat healthfully? A good start is to go to the top of the page on the right and subscribe to get the e-book, “Eating For Energy.

2. Acquire at least a general knowledge of how your body works. Learn the effect of a food, supplements, or drugs on your body. For example, your liver has the job of neutralizing and preparing toxins for elimination.  Are you surprised that chemical drugs that are designed to alleviate one symptom often have a “side effect” of harming the liver.  I prefer the term “system effect” to “side effect.”  One effect of aspirin is to relieve pain, but another system effect it to create stomach ulcers or hemorrhaging.

3.  Assess a weight loss diet in the context of health. What is the goal of the diet?  If you answer, “to lose weight”, you get part credit.  The full answer should be to achieve a healthy weight as you maintain or increase your overall health.  For example, a diet product based on stimulants that reduce the appetite may fool the body – but it doesn’t support the body’s nutritional requirements.  A quality weight management program insures that all the nutrients that you need are provided in the right amounts to insure your health.  A quality weight management program has no toxic challenges to the body.  Remember, when you go on a diet, you are typically reducing the number of calories that you take in…with that reduced number of calories goes a reduced number of nutrients.  You simply cannot utilize nutrients that you didn’t eat! To get help in assessing whether a diet is one that will  not only take off weight, but make you healthier and help you to keep it off, feel free to contact me and I’ll do my best to help you do that.

4.  Learn to combine label reading with Google. If you see an ingredient that has a chemical name that is Greek to you, now you have Google for a quick education.  Since Food Processing Companies have been there first and set up a variety of articles telling you how wonderful their ingredient is, you need to get more information. Google for “dangers of xxx” or “reported side effects of xxx.” A couple of good examples to hone your skills are Aspartame and Acesulfame K, both common sugar substitutes.  Interesting side note:  every article that tells how safe aspartame is has been written or underwritten by the pharmaceutical company that makes it or by companies that use it in their products. There is not one article by any independent researcher that doesn’t point out the very real dangers of that chemical.

5.  The body is designed to be self healing- give it a chance. We have all cut a finger and seen that in a relatively short time the finger heals. That is a simple example of our immune systems and repair systems at work.  I would really like to see you develop a better understanding of your immune system.  You don’t have to be an expert, but there are nutrients and activities that build a healthy immune system.  There are other things such as household chemicals and poor food choices that weaken the immune system.  A healthy immune system will reduce the risk of illness as well as the severity of an illness.
Question to think about – research has shown that an only child tends to be more susceptible to common illnesses than children with siblings.  WHY would that be so? ?  If you want help, just ask Sandy.
